Clay targets are launched from a single house at varying angles, testing a shooter's swing, timing, and instinct with a shotgun.
Our trap program includes the Clay Center Community High School Trap Team, which competes weekly in the Kansas State High School Clay Target League.

4-H Rules & Safety at a Glance
Kansas 4-H shotgun follows the Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports Fall Match Championships General Rules (updated August 2026) together with ATA, NSSA, and NSCA rules. The High School Trap Team's league play follows the Kansas State High School Clay Target League's own rules. The current official rules and each match's bulletin always come first.
Who can compete
- 4-H membership is required. Youth must be officially enrolled in 4-H and fall in the age divisions below, counted as of January 1.
- Divisions. Juniors are 4-H age 10–12, Intermediates 13–15, and Seniors 16–18.
Getting to the state match
- Qualifying score: 35 of 50 clays, shot at 16 yards at an approved qualifying event.
- The state match is 100 clays at 16 yards. Teams are five shooters, picked from the top state-match scores.
Equipment
- Shooters bring their own new, factory-loaded shells — no reloads. 12 gauge or smaller, shot no larger than #7½, and no more than 1⅛ oz. of shot. Shells are checked, and an illegal load means disqualification with no warning.
- No slings and no release triggers. Semi-automatic catchers are strongly recommended.
On the range
- Eye and ear protection are required.
- At least one hand supports the shotgun at all times, and barrels never rest on a toe or foot or point at any part of the body. Shells are never set on the ground.
- All electronics — phones, smart watches, noise-canceling devices, and headphones — stay off once you are called to compete. Shoes must completely cover the feet on the shooting line.
